CHICO — Two Chico State students have died and a third remains in critical condition after a weekend crash.

Freshman Bryant Mata-Adams, 19, a microbiology student from San Diego, died Tuesday after being in critical condition since the crash, shortly after midnight on Sunday

Declared dead at the scene was Austin Silver, 20, from Simi Valley. He was a sophomore studying music industry and technology.

The driver, Diego Arriaga-Rodriguez, 18, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, remained in critical condition Tuesday, said Enloe spokeswoman Christina Chavira.

Arriaga-Rodriguez was found to be under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Arriaga-Rodriguez was westbound on Bidwell Avenue about 0.3 mile west of Rose Avenue at an unknown speed when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road. The 1998 BMW he was driving overturned off an embankment and landed on its roof 3 to 5 feet from Big Chico Creek.

The three men had to be extricated from the car, according to CHP.

The winding road Arriaga-Rodriguez was driving on has a speed limit of 25 mph.
