LODI, Calif.—An Army corporal on leave from his third tour in Afghanistan will be able to give his family the Christmas he wanted to thanks to the generosity of a central California town.

KCRA-TV in Sacramento reports ( http://bit.ly/1fS3wnh) that residents, firefighters and police officers in Lodi stepped forward with gifts and cash on Saturday to replace the thousands of dollars' worth of presents that burglars stole from Cpl. Chris Petrossian's home.

Petrossian still was in Afghanistan on Monday when his frightened wife called to tell him about the break-in that left the couple's home ransacked.

An iPad and a digital camera were among the $5,000 worth of stolen merchandise he had ordered online and had shipped home as a surprise.

He tells KCRA he has been able to replace about three-quarters of the stolen gifts with the community's donations.
