Humboldt County Fair races times posted; big changes announced

Humboldt Beacon

The Humboldt County Fair will have a pair of post times for its 114th race meeting that will open Friday, Aug. 13.

Fair manager Stuart Titus announced two different starting times for races for the historic eight-day meeting that will run through Sunday, Aug. 22.

There will be a 2:07 p.m. start for Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday race programs. A special 3:07 p.m. first race post time is slated for both Friday race cards.

Even though the Humboldt County Fair will open on Thursday, Aug. 12, racing will not start until the following day. There will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday programs offered the opening weekend. There will not be any racing Monday and Tuesday (Aug.16-17), before the horses return for afternoon action Wednesday (Aug. 18) through Sunday, Aug. 22.

Humboldt will write another chapter in its horse race history, as it runs un-overlapped as the lone Northern California thoroughbred racing venue during its second week. For years, Ferndale ran the same time as the Bay Meadows Fair, and in recent years identical as a special Golden Gate Fields' meeting.

However, the California Horse Racing Board voted last January to give the Humboldt County Fair the stage to itself during its second week, following an overlapped opening weekend (Aug. 13-15) with the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa.

"This is huge for us," said Titus. “We are looking at the potential of earning 'host' fees (commissions earned from satellite wagering) in the neighborhood of several hundred thousands of dollars. These new revenues will enable us to re-establish a reserve fund for the Humboldt Fair Association and to reinvest into our racing facilities so that we are in a better position for future years."

The starting times for the eight days of Humboldt racing will give Ferndale patrons an opportunity to also wager on simulcast cards from Del Mar, Saratoga and other race tracks throughout the U.S. between the local "live" racing action.
