Always a good sport, Humboldt County 2nd District Supervisor Estelle Fennell gave it her all in the pie eating contest alongside other local faces at last year's Fortuna Fireworks Festival held at Newburg Park on July 3.

The Fortuna Fireworks Festival has been working feverishly to create another earth shattering event to kick of the Fourth of July holiday and weekend activities. Thousands will flood Fortuna on Thursday for activities, food and a spectacular fireworks display at dark at Newburg Park.

Activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and wrap up in preparation for the fireworks extravaganza at 8:30 p.m. Those who wish to participate in all of the activities can line Mora field for convenient parking and views of the lighted show for $2.

Unlimited kid activities are available for a $3 wristband and will include five bounce houses, clowns, face painters, balloon animals, rock wall, reptile petting zoo, water games, tug of war, potato sack races, and an ice cream eating contest.

Barbecue plates will include tri-tip or chicken, potato salad or chips, corn on the cob, watermelon and a roll. Tickets for the barbecue are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Water and soda will be available for $1.

Many local organizations will be on hand at vendor booths selling fresh mini-donuts, snow cones, cotton candy, ice cream and more. These local organizations will be using their funds to support local programs and youth.

Make sure to set aside time to watch the annual pie eating contest that always includes local government and city officials. There is never a dull moment among the competitors using all levels of tactics to distract and intimidate each other all in good fun.
