The Humboldt Senior Resource Center Home Delivered Meals program needs immediate help getting meals out in the Fortuna area. There has been a surge of driver turnover and now the program needs help to make sure senior citizens get their meals.
There are many homebound elders in the Fortuna area and this meal may be the only food they have that day. Although still a small town community it does not mean that everyone has family around to assist them or care for them.
That is where this food program comes in to ensure that the Fortuna area homebound elderly community is getting the much needed nutrition they need.
There is an immediate need for regular and substitute volunteer drivers. Volunteers need to have a working vehicle, valid California driver's license, insurance, able to lift 25 pounds, be 18 years or older, and have a few hours to spare.
Hours needed are from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Some mileage reimbursement is available, if needed.
These meals help assist Fortuna's elderly to stay in their homes and remain independent. The meal itself is nutritionally balanced and of great benefit to the seniors.
Delivering meals is just one of the wonderful services volunteers will provide. Many meal recipients enjoy the visit as well. For them it may be the only conversation or visit they have that day..
