Twenty-one minutes after the new year began, the first baby of the 2014 in Humboldt County was born.

At 12:21 a.m. at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, Brandy Castro of McKinleyville gave birth to Laila Rose Lorraine Castro. Her husband, Juan Castro, said they were expecting the baby to arrive two days earlier.

”I really thought she was going to be born a lot sooner,” he said. “We were ready to have her.”

Brandy said that while her husband was eager to see his new daughter, he also had another wish -- one that was granted.

”Dad got his wish for a New Year's baby,” she said.

Their 5-year-old son Johnny was all aglow, knowing that he not only has a younger sister, but that his sister is also the New Year's baby.

Brandy's mother, Lori Barton, and sister, Sarah Giuntoli, were also in the room to see the newest member of their family.

”She is a beautiful baby,” Barton said.

Juan said their McKinleyville home is all prepared for Laila's arrival, and they are ready to bring her home for the first time.

”We're all ready to go now,” he said. “It's pretty exciting.”

Shortly after, at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, Courtney Renshaw of Eureka gave birth to a 7-pound, 8-ounce baby girl at 1:48 a.m. who was named May Lia. Like Castro, Renshaw was expecting the baby to arrive on the Dec. 30. May Lia is Renshaw's second daughter.
