Firefighters were able to quell a garage fire on the 400 block of West Sonoma Street in Eureka early Thursday morning within 20 minutes of receiving the dispatch call, according to a Humboldt Bay Fire press release.

Three engines, a ladder truck and two chief officers responded to the fire at around 5:50 a.m., according to the press release. Additional crews were called over after the first arriving engine reported seeing smoke billowing from the garage. A total of 17 firefighters, one fire support member and an additional engine provided by the Arcata Fire Department responded and were able to control the fire in under 20 minutes, according to the press release. Fire crews remained on scene for about two hours.

No injuries were reported, however the fire damage was estimated to cost around $7,000, according to the press release.

Humboldt Bay Fire is still investigating the cause of the fire, but said in the press release that they do not believe it to be suspicious.

As a precaution to prevent fires, Humboldt Bay Fire asks the community to properly extinguish and dispose of their cigarettes or other smoking paraphernalia into a proper container.
