Authorities announced Saturday that 10 drivers were arrested or cited at a DUI checkpoint set up in Arcata on Friday night.
According to a Fortuna Police Department press release, officers with Avoid the 7 DUI Task Force -- a multi-agency law enforcement team -- screened 846 vehicles at a checkpoint set up between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. near the intersection of Samoa Boulevard and G Street. They arrested four people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, one person on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and cited five others for driving without a license or with a suspended license.
Another FPD release states that this year's winter holiday enforcement has resulted in a “significant number” of DUI arrests. From 12:01 a.m., Dec. 13 through midnight on Dec. 20, officers representing seven local law enforcement agencies have arrested 35 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The DUI task force will continue conducting patrols in various cities from now until New Year's. The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
