South Bay School implemented a “shelter in place” around 1:15 p.m. Friday after a nearby Eureka man allegedly stabbed his own dog and fled toward the school, according to Lt. Steve Knight of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.

Around 1:07 p.m. Friday, authorities received a report of a man identified as 43-year-old Westley Wendel Wright stabbing his female pitbull terrier with a knife outside of his residence on Purdue Drive in Eureka, according to a sheriff's office press release.

When deputies arrived at Wright's house, they found the injured dog chained at the back of the residence. Wright's roommate told sheriff's deputies that Wright had fled on foot, according to the release.

The dog -- named “Little Bit” -- had attacked another neighborhood dog on Thursday, prompting Animal Control to come to Wright's home on Friday afternoon, according to Knight.

”(Wright) was upset that Animal Control came to his house looking for his dog, so he decided to kill his dog,” Knight said.

Sheriff's deputies alerted South Bay Elementary to Wright being possibly armed with a knife, which prompted the school to implement a “shelter in place.”

Unlike a lockdown, South Bay Principal Gary Storts said that a “shelter in place” allows students and teachers to “go about their daily activities, but are to be kept inside with curtains drawn.”

”Student safety is our top priority,” Storts said. “We're really proud at how the students and staff handled the situation.”

Wright was found by sheriff's deputies around 2 p.m. in a field behind South Bay Elementary, where he was arrested on suspicion of felony cruelty to an animal and for an outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrant for driving under the influence and possession of concentrated cannabis, according to the press release. Deputies booked Wright into the Humboldt County Jail on $35,000 bail.

The injured dog was taken to a local veterinarian for a stab wound on its right shoulder and is expected to survive, according to Knight.
