An elderly man was rescued from a burning residence at 2807 R St. in Eureka late Tuesday evening by a passing pedestrian on his way to work.

The occupant was led out of the building by the passerby and taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to the burning single-story structure at approximately 11:23 p.m. Flames were emerging from the garage of the building and were spreading into the attic due to a open access hatch in the garage.

After nearly an hour, Humboldt Fire was able to control the flames and then performed fire overhaul for an additional two-and-a-half hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
