The city of Fortuna along with Fortuna's business community will be holding the annual Kid's Free Holiday Movies on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21 at the Fortuna Movie Theater. Movie passes are available at most Fortuna businesses.

Over 75 businesses will have tickets available to give out to customers for their children and grandchildren. The tickets are good for children 12 and under, and adults with young children. The special showing will be on the two Saturdays at 10 a.m.

To see a list of participating businesses to shop and receive your tickets, visit www.FortunaBusiness.com. The movie event is sponsored by the City of Fortuna, the Fortuna Business Improvement District, the Fortuna Business Community and the 2013 sponsors.

”We all encourage you to shop local and shop Fortuna this holiday season,” said the district's Executive Director Dianna Rios.

The Dec. 7 showing will be “The Smurfs” and the Dec. 21 showing will be “Arthur Christmas.”

The event has several volunteer adult chaperones at each show within the theater. Parents are more than welcome to drop off their children and take advantage of the movie to go shop in town for the holidays. The movies will end just before noon and children can be picked back up then.

“Organizers are asking that only one adult accompany young children and that families try to have groups of children come with one adult to allow more seats for kids,” Rios said.

There are no tickets available at the theater.

”The organizers also are reminding parents and grandparents this event is to encourage adults to finish holiday shopping in Fortuna while the kids are occupied with the movie,” Rios said.

Last year, over 300 children and 150 adults filled three movie theaters to watch the showing of The Grinch. This years, numbers are expected to be just as high and organizers are busy getting ready. The two movies are made available by sponsors to help promote local shopping in Fortuna. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to drop off their children at 10 a.m. and pick them back up just before noon. This way, they are freed up to head into town to shop at one of the many local businesses.
