Three of four candidates for the Ferndale Unified School District governing board in the Nov. 5 election were asked to submit statements to the Humboldt Beacon for publication. Incumbents Jerry Hansen and Joanne Farley submitted the following statements:

Name: Jerry Hansen

Age: 69

Occupation: Own and operate a log truck.

Family: Married 51 years; five children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Public service record: Board member on the old Grizzly Bluff school district, 12 years on Ferndale Unified School District board.

Reason for running: With 16 total years of school board experience, I feel I know how a school board should work. I am opinionated, and will express myself. I don't always agree with the administration. I am on the board to support the kids. Kids should always come first.

Name: Joanne Farley

Age: I will celebrate my 29th birthday for the 30th time this January.

Occupation: Retired budget analyst/secretary from Eureka City Schools, and currently employed with the city of Rio Dell as a senior fiscal assistant.

Family: Married 41 years to my grammar school sweetheart, have three children and five grandchildren.

Public service record: Served 8.5 years as a school board member for the Ferndale Unified School District.

Reason for running: It truly is all about the kids. My passion is to give children in our community the best educational experience possible, and by doing so, to motivate them to become lifelong learners regardless of their future occupations.
