A new sign is being constructed to welcome those visiting the city of Fortuna. Motorists coming into the Friendly City via Kenmar Road can see the project under construction, with the plan for having the new sign installed by Apple Harvest Festival in late October.
The project was conceived by the Leadership Fortuna, Class of 2013 which decided it wanted to focus on beautification of Fortuna Boulevard. Local artists Robert Moeller and Byran McWaters are both working on the new sign. Moeller has designed the sign, while metal artist McWaters has created the letters and icons.
Leadership Fortuna, Class of 2013 member Tiara Brown said local donors include the McLean Foundation, Fortuna Business and Improvement District, and the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce Tourism & Marketing Committee. The total cost of the new sign is approximately $7,500.
”The class worked hard to come up with the funding and work through the permitting process; and now it's finally coming to life,” Brown said. She also offered a big thank you to the city of Fortuna for being extremely helpful during the permitting process.
”There were many departments to go through with it being an electrical project,” she said.
Planning for the project began earlier this year, and groundbreaking for the sign took place on Sept. 3. According to Brown, the old welcome sign at the Kenmar Road location will be moved and reused at a different location.
