Downtown Fortuna was all wet on Thursday, July 15 after fire fighters from seven local agencies took part in the annual fireman's games associated with the Fortuna Rodeo.
With retired Fortuna Fire Chief Frank Hizer announcing, 12 teams participated from the Arcata Fire Department, Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department, Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, Loleta Volunteer Fire Department, Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department (including one member of the Scotia Volunteer Fire Department), and the U.S. Forest Service.
In teams of four, the fire fighters competed in the hose lay, seeing who could connect the lengths of hose, and then using a powerful spray of water through that hose, be the first to knock over a plastic orange cone. A couple of missed hose connections left members of the crowd gathered to watch the firemen's games, with a good soaking.
First place in the hose relay was captured by the Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department team, with a time of just over 34-seconds. Second place was Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department Company 5 with a time of almost 36-seconds, and third place was the Arcata Fire Department team with a time of 36.12 seconds.
The firemen's games also included a bucket competition. First place in this event was captured by the U.S. Forest Service team with a time of 52.41 seconds, second place was the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department team with a score of 59.22 seconds, and third place was the Loleta Volunteer Fire Department team with a time of 1:03.
