The annual College of the Redwoods Athletics Dinner and Sports Auction will be held on Thursday, Aug. 12 at the Adorni Center. The Dinner and Sports Auction is a benefit for CR student athletes and their sports programs.

This year's event will highlight Mike Pigg as the honoree and featured speaker. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a no-host Social and Silent Auction, Dinner at 6 p.m. followed by Mike Pigg and the Live Auction at 7 p.m.

Pigg, an Arcata High graduate, competed in cross country and track as a student athlete at CR in 1982-83. He made the transition to the sport of triathlon (swim, bike, run) while attending CR and went on to a 17-year career as one of the greatest professional triathletes ever. In 1988 Pigg completed one of the most dominating seasons of any athlete by winning 15 of 20 triathlons and finishing second in three others. One of those second place finishes was at the Ironman in Hawaii. He was named 'Triathlete of the Year' by Triathlete Magazine in 1988 and 1991 and was the National Champion of the U.S. Triathlon Series four times.

Pigg is a member of the College of the Redwoods and Arcata High School Halls of Fame and was named the Times-Standard 'Humboldt County Athlete of the Century' in 1999, heading a list of 100 of the top local athletes in the 21st century.

Tickets for the Dinner and Sports Auction are $65 for a single person or $500 for a table of eight. Tickets can be bought by calling the CR Athletic Department at 476-4213 or 476-4242.
