Several members of Eel River Lutheran churches received their confirmation during the week of Reformation Sunday, where Lutherans everywhere commemorate the day, Oct. 31, 1517, when Martin Luther nailed to the church doors at Wittenberg the "95 Thesis.” The church of the day was selling “indulgences,” or rather, go-straight-to-heaven cards in order to pay for the building of the cathedral in Rome. Luther's 95 Thesis questioned the theology of “Buying one's way to heaven” and attacked the church power structure. He called on Christians to commit themselves to the Risen Savior.
On Sunday, Oct. 30, Emily Diehl, Kenton Goldsby, Jared Hugh and Zachary Hugh made Luther's commitment at the 9 a.m. Confirmation ceremonies at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Ferndale, then later that day at Christ Lutheran Church in Fortuna. Their confirmation marks their commitment to the Bible, and to be adult members of the church of Grace alone, Faith alone, and Word alone.
Several young people were confirmed on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Ferndale and at Christ Lutheran Church in Fortuna, respectively. From the left is Zachery Hugh, Jared Hugh, Kenton Goldsby and Emily Diehl.
