Fortuna Senior Services has several new programs starting in the new year.
According to Carol Kinser, president of Fortuna Senior Services, "We are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding 2010.”
Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 6, exercise teacher Nanette Heidtman began two new classes: belly dancing and relaxation. These classes will also be offered to the community as a whole, with members of Fortuna Senior Services paying half of the $40 fee charged for each course.
Belly dancing will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, and the relaxation class will start at 7 p.m. Eight sessions in all will be held. Even though it's after the registration deadline, call the FSS office at 726-9203 to let them know of your interest and class location.
Beginning on Monday, Jan. 11, a writing class, "My Life Story," will be led by retired pastor Ray Dowdy. Call the FSS office for the location and to register for this free class for members.
Starting on Tuesday, Jan. 12, a new Wellness Lecture Series will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 11:15 a.m. at the Mountain View Village Senior Dining Room. The lecture series is free, but those choosing to stay for lunch at noon are asked to donate $3 and to make reservations by calling 725-6245.
Sylvia Jutila and Diane Clem of Fortuna will be the facilitators for the wellness series, and the presenters will be health care professionals who will give practical information on different aspects of senior health. Suggestions for topics may be given to the facilitators at the lectures, or by calling the FSS office. The wellness sessions will be held at Mountain View Village, 2130 Smith Lane, Fortuna.
On Friday, Jan. 22, a mini tour will be conducted at the Eel River Brewery's new plant in Scotia. The trip will include lunch at the Scotia Pub. Volunteers scheduling the mini trips are Gail Sisson, Linda Gillette, and Lee McDowell. For reservations and details on the mini trips, call the FSS office.
On Sunday, Jan. 24, the first Open Mic Music Jamboree of 2010 will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fortuna Monday Club, 610 Main Street. All ages from kids to seniors are welcome at this popular free event. Light refreshments will be available.
The musicians are anchored by Falling Rocks, featuring musicians Ken and Maria Jorgensen and Hal Krohn. A variety of instruments will be featured including guitar, bass, trumpet, mandolin, accordion, ukulele, flute, harmonica, and bongos.
On Wednesday, Jan. 27, a new genealogy class will be taught by Allison Grundman of the Redwood Genealogy Society. The first class will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. Those attending will decide the days and times of future sessions. The only charge for the class would be for making copies. Call the FSS office for the location.
Membership in Fortuna Senior Services is open to all residents over 50 living in the Eel River Valley which includes, Fortuna, Hydesville, Carlotta, Rio Dell, Ferndale, and Loleta. Annual dues are $24 for individuals and $36 for couples.
