Lisa Ann Gillard of Fortuna, born March 28, 1951 in Scotia, passed away peacefully at her home in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Nov. 10, 2011 after a three-year struggle with cancer.
Lisa changed her name to Lucia Annalisa Gillard, embracing her Albanian/Italian heritage. She was an extensive traveler in Ireland, Scotland, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and Canada.
But Lucia always loved Humboldt County. She frequented its beaches from Centerville to Patrick's Point, and her favorite river spot was Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. She loved the fog and rain and all that came with it.
Lucia was the 1969 valedictorian of Fortuna Union High School, received her baccalaureate from Humboldt State University in 1973, and doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of San Francisco in 1976. She was multi-lingual, extremely well read, and had a passion for photography. A memorial and exhibit of her work is planned for spring, 2012 in Phoenix, AZ. Lucia is survived by her husband Dick Arentz, daughters Catherine Hilcove and son-in-law Simon Hilcove, and Maria Gmuca. Her brother Eric Gillard and sister-in-law Lori Barker and their daughter and Lucia's beloved niece, Natalie Gillard, her sister Nancy Gillard and brother-in-law Lloyd Bartels and her three nephews, Josef, Liam, and Silas Bartels, and her aunt Martha and uncle Richard Stookey.
