Beverly J. McCombs, 73, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 16, 2011, in Santa Rosa, Calif. A native of Fortuna, she was born on April 26, 1938, to Sam and Beryl Olesen. She attended grammar and high school in Fortuna. After high school, Beverly moved to Sacramento. In 1963, she moved back to Fortuna where she met Jim McCombs, her husband of 45 years.
In 1967, Jim and Beverly moved to Sonoma with their family. Beverly was always involved and a big part of her community. She and Jim were long-time members of Valley of the Moon Riding Club. Beverly was involved with city government becoming director of the Chamber of Commerce and an officer of Soroptomist of Sonoma. She was an accomplished artist winning 15 “best of shows” at the Petaluma Fair, the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa and also won awards at the California State Fair.
A Christian for more than 30 years, Beverly served the community by volunteering her time and talents to many events, families and individuals. She loved and was devoted to her family. Her greatest joy and passion was praying for others. Beverly was a wonderful person who had a great love of God and a gift of serving Him by ministering to others.
Beverly spent many hours walking for the benefit of others. She completed 22 marathons in benefit of leukemia through Team-in-Training. She loved spending time with her husband, Jim. They rode seven 100-mile horseback rides in the backcountry of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. They rode the mule train to the bottom of the Grand Canyon twice and also just recently completed their tour of all 50 states.
Beverly leaves behind her husband, Jim; children, Becky Hirshfield (Tim Tillman), Mike McCombs (Teri), Aaron McCombs (Katy), Don McCombs (Charlene), Kathy McCombs Collings (Dan); sister, Marilyn (Elwood) Anderson; brother, Richard (Judy) Olesen; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Christine Raynor; her grandson, Michael McCombs; and her brother, Bob Olesen.
Inurnment will take place at the Rohnerville City Cemetery, 526 Rohnerville Rd., Rohnerville, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the inurnment with a celebration of life to follow at the Fortuna United Methodist Church, 922 N Street, Fortuna.
