Students auditioned in September and October in a rigorous process that included singing an Italian art song by memory, singing scales, tonal memory exercises, and sight-singing. Students who were accepted first participated in three regional honor choirs. Humboldt County sent three students to the Coastal Region Honor Choir in Aptos, Calif., last November. Along with Alex Wilson, Fortuna High School student Kevin LoMiglio and Eureka High School student Trevor Lynn represented Humboldt County at the Coastal Region Honor Choir.
Regional Honor Choir participants with the highest audition scores are invited to sing in the All-State Choirs. Students rehearse for three days and then perform in a concert in March. Fortuna High School music teacher Dr. Sarah McClimon noted the importance of the honor choir experience. “The Regional and All-State Honor Choirs are a very special educational experience for students. They learn very challenging music in an intensive rehearsal period, while meeting other outstanding musicians from high schools throughout the state. After the performance, these students return and share their knowledge with their choirs at home. Alex is an exemplary musician and a great citizen. He will represent Fortuna High School and Humboldt County well at the State Honor Choir.”
Alex is an active musician at Fortuna High School where he sings in two choirs, plays alto saxophone in the Jazz Express, and plays baritone horn in the Symphonic Band. He recently sang a solo for the Fortuna High School Music Department Winter Concert. Alex's travel is supported by the Rising Stars Foundation, through the Humboldt County Office of Education.
