Eureka Symphony features youth solo finalists

Franklin Stover, Humboldt Beacon

The Eureka Symphony every year around this time presents a youth concert featuring orchestral music for young people and gives promising young musicians a chance to solo with the orchestra. Two Eureka Symphony performances will take place in the Arkley Performing Arts Center, one on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m., with a repeat performance on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m.

Works on the program will include the intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagi, “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Moussorgsky, a selection from “Superman Returns,” film score by John Williams, and “The Musicians of Bremen,” by Bernard Rogers.

The youth performers, chosen by audition, are 18 or younger and residents of Humboldt county, and are expected to have their contest selection memorized.

The soloists this year will include Steven Dewey, clarinet, playing the slow movement from Mozart's Clarinet Concert in A; Nicholas Pietromonaco, piano, will play the first movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concert; and Christopher Ives, violin, will play the Introduction to Saint-Saens' Et Rondo Capriccioso.

The Arkley Center for the Performing Arts is located at 412 G St., Eureka. Seating is at 7:30; concert at 8 p.m. Call 442-1956 for ticket prices.
