Fortuna Garden Club names 'Yard of the Month' for August

This month, the Fortuna Garden Club spotlights the yard of Kim and Gene Horning at 118 12th St. The Hornings have been decorating their yard profusely with flowers for about 10 years. Even in winter when the rains come, according to a garden club press release, the yard has been nicely decorated and at Christmas time, lights everywhere!

Both Hornings were born and raised in the San Diego area, came to Fortuna 35 years ago, and have lived at this property for 28 years. The yard, once completely overgrown with wild berries, has been thanks to the Hornings' efforts, replete with planted flowers and vegetables ever since. The entire driveway is supported on both sides by cement blocks, and within those supports are dozens of petunias, geraniums, sunflowers, dahlias, rudbeckia, fuschias, liatris, gladioli and alyssum.

A huge persimmon tree dominates the front yard, and in the back yard there is a gazebo surrounding a filled-in pond — a casualty of fish-hungry raccoons — complete with benches and statuary.

In the back, a cottage style garden surrounds an apple tree, with flowers spilling out all over. Hanging baskets of begonias and geraniums and petunias highlight the outdoor seating area. The Hornings collect seeds from all their flowers and use them in subsequent years, but each year they purchase 25-30 flats of starts, just to make sure that no space is left untouched by color.
