Rancho Sequoia shooting suspect knew victim

The man killed in Monday's shooting has been identified as Rancho Sequoia resident Scott Johnson, 57, according to sheriff's office Lt. Wayne Hanson.

The suspect in the shooting, Matthew Aaron Brown, was arrested at 6 a.m. Tuesday by the sheriff's office SWAT team. Brown, 30, is also suspected in the fatal shooting of Alderpoint resident Neil Decker, 49, on Friday, reportedly in a dispute over personnel property.

The sheriff's office reported that two deputies were in the area Monday looking for Brown and were on scene within five minutes of the 911 call at 9:49 p.m. With an armed suspect at large, the SWAT team was called in, officials said. Hanson said Johnson and Brown were acquainted with each other, which is not unusual in the small community of 100 to 200 residents.

"It's rural and secluded," he said, adding that many people in the area — which has seen four homicides in the last 24 months — live off the grid and grow marijuana.

Initial witnesses statements indicate Johnson may have been among a group of residents who went to look for Brown.

"That's what the initial reports were," Hanson said. "Right now, our detectives are investigating."
