California Garden Clubs president visits Humboldt District

Rita Desilets, California Garden Clubs, Inc. (CGCI) president, 2013-2015, made her official visit to Humboldt District on June 13. The meeting took place at the Humboldt Botanical Garden Sun Valley Greenhouse, and was part of the Humboldt District quarterly meeting.

During the meeting Desilets presented a California Garden Clubs Special Commendation to the Fortuna Garden Club as it celebrates its 90th birthday. Accepting were co-presidents Mary Lou Lang and Bev Ward. Humboldt District Director of the California Garden Clubs is Janean Guest, also a Fortuna Garden Club member.

Delilets presented a CGCI Landscape Design Commendation to the Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation in recognition of the progress in constructing the 44.5 acre garden, since its founding in 1991. Additionally she was honored, as CGCI president, with a patio paver to be placed in the Paver Pavillion.

Desilets resides in Van Nuys, where she is a talented flora designer and a "crafter." She is a member of the Southern California Garden Club and the San Fernando Valley District.

CGCI is the largest nonprofit, volunteer gardening organization in the state of California. It has over 350 garden clubs and plant societies throughout the state representing more than 21,000 members. There are 28 districts statewide, including Humboldt District, which has six clubs and over 200 members. CGCI was organized in 1931 and is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) and Pacific Region.

The Humboldt District, California Garden Clubs, Inc., goals are to create and promote interest in horticulture gardening and floral and landscape design; to encourage and engage in civic beautification and the improvement of roadsides; to aid in protecting California's native plants, wildlife and natural beauty; and to promote, and participate in, projects and programs that conserve our natural resources.
