Eureka college student found dead on SoCal beach

A 20-year-old University of California Santa Barbara student from Eureka was found dead on a beach in Santa Barbara County this morning.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department's Vince Agapito, Sierra Markee-Winkler's body was found at about 7 a.m. on the beach below Del Playa Park.

Fire officials said a bicyclist noticed the body and called 911. Responding emergency personnel declared Markee-Winkler dead upon arrival.

The cause of death was not released by officials. The coroner's office stated the investigation into how and why Markee-Winkler died could take several weeks.

Officials added Markee-Winkler lived in Isla Vista while the Daily Nexus, UC Santa Barbara's student newspaper, reported she was a double major in philosophy and language, culture and society.
