Week honors public safety services' lifeline

The Fortuna Police Department reminds the public that this week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Introduced in Congress by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International in 1991, this week is dedicated annually to public safety professionals who answer 911 calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to citizens everywhere.

The Fortuna Police Department Communication Center is a 24-hour, 365-day-a-year operation responsible for answering 911 calls from within Fortuna, Rio Dell, and Ferndale. The center dispatches calls for service for the Fortuna Police Department, Rio Dell Police Department, Ferndale Police Department and the Fortuna Fire Department.

"I want to publicly thank all public safety communications personnel for their professionalism and for providing assistance each time they are called upon," said Communications Supervisor Sgt. Charles Ellebrecht in a press release. "I am especially proud of the communications personnel working for the Fortuna Police Department and I thank them for their service."
