Little League baseball in Rio Dell Starts tonight

Little League (minor league) baseball is back in Rio Dell, and for the first time in seven years, the home team will be using the Davis Street park baseball field. The nearly 3 1/2 acre piece of property was recently gifted to the city of Rio Dell by the Rio Dell School District.

The Rio Dell-Scotia Athletics (A's) team was re-established last year, and again will compete this year under the watchful eyes of coaches Mike and Jamie Lammori. The first home game at the Davis Street field is tonight at 6 p.m.

The Lammoris and many other parent volunteers, as well as the ball players themselves have put in many, many volunteer hours of work, getting the field and snack shack ready for the season. The bathrooms were fixed, thanks to a donation from Diamond Plumbing, and a donation of lumber from McKenny's Do It Best Building Center in Eureka replaced the backstop.

Eureka Sand & Gravel donated 10 yards of pea gravel and several loads of sand over the last couple of years, and Redi-Rents in Fortuna donated the use of a tractor and compactor. Ace Hardware in Fortuna and Fortuna Feed and Farm both donated grass seed for the field, Bess Gravel & Asphalt donated cold patch to fill in holes in the parking lot, and Fortuna Signs donated the new coat of paint on the snack shack.

Still needed is funding to replace the fencing around the field. Humboldt Fence Company has generously donated $1,000 toward the project, and Forbusco Lumber in Fortuna has donated pressure treated lumber and fencing hardware to the project. Proceeds from snack shack sales this evening will be also dedicated to new fencing.

Other home games for the Rio Dell-Scotia A's are scheduled for April 17, May 20 and May 29, and June 3. All start times are 6 p.m. The Eel River Little League has been supportive and assisted with the re-establishment of the local team.

The city of Rio Dell will be conducting and paying for an official land survey, installing fencing to separate the gifted parcel from other school property, and legal costs and fees associated with the transfer.
