Free compost will be available from the city of Fortuna, starting Monday continuing until the supply is gone. The compost is Exception Quality (EQ) Class and can be used as a soil amendment to your property or place of residence.
"The public will be limited to 2 1/2 cubic yards (roughly one full-size pickup truck load) of material per address per year," said Doug Culbert, chief water treatment plant operator for the city of Fortuna.
"This is per the city's biosolids management plan," he said.
Everyone will be required to sign a "hold harmless" release of liability when picking up the compost, and drivers must have proper tarps for covering compost while transporting from the city facility. No pickups with canopies will be loaded.
The facility is located at 180 Dinsmore Drive and hours of pick up are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The public should use the corporation yard entrance (second gate past the bridge) and then follow the signs to load the compost. More information is available by calling 725-1476.
