2 candidates will compete in Yurok runoff election

Pending official results, the two top candidates in a special election held Wednesday by the Yurok Tribe will compete in a runoff election to fill the South District representative seat left vacant by the death of Councilwoman Bonnie Green.

According to a Yurok Tribe press release, the unofficial results are as follows: Lana M. McCovey, 24 percent; Gerald Green, 20 percent; Maria Tripp, 20 percent; Gary Markussen Sr., 14 percent; Trish A. Carlson, 11 percent; Linda K. Cooley, 11 percent.

Unofficial election results were released Wednesday, and the election board will meet on Monday to certify the results. The runoff election will be held on May 7, and absentee ballots will be sent out April 11.
