State Senate candidate talks with Fortuna Chamber members

Second District state Senate candidate Mike McGuire made a stop in Fortuna earlier this week, speaking to members of the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce.

McGuire is currently a Sonoma County Supervisor, served six years as mayor and city councilman in his hometown of Healdsburg, and four years on the local school board.

"If I am your state senator, you will have no greater commitment than jobs and economic development," McGuire said. "I am a hard worker," he added, "and I will fight for the people I work for," referring to those who live in the seven-county 2nd Senate District.

"If you're going to run for this seat, you need to represent everyone," McGuire said. The district stretches from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border, includes 900,000 people, and 40 percent of California's coastline.

McGuire said in the new few weeks he will be releasing what he called a North Coast Jobs Plan. It will be aimed at helping small businesses, and will include proposals to reduce and streamline business start-up fees, and tax credits for purchases and hiring local employees.

"When small business is successful, local and state government are also successful," McGuire said.

Another priority is education. "We have to focus on education," he said, "and on non-college bound students," noting that 72 percent of high school graduates do not go on to college. "We need to also focus on job skills in high school," he said.

He talked of the crucial need for infrastructure in rural communities, such as broadband service. Another priority he mentioned was the Richardson Grove bypass on Highway 101. "We need to work with Caltrans to advance this project," McGuire said.

McGuire has been making regular visits to Humboldt County since announcing his candidacy last year. "I am active, engaged, and involved," he said. During this visit to Humboldt County, he also planned to meet with proponents of the East-West railroad proposal.
