Thirteen college students will share $13,000 in scholarships awarded at the Redwood Region Logging Conference held earlier this month in Ukiah. Two College of the Redwoods and seven Humboldt State University students are among the scholarship recipients.
Carmen Hergenrader and Alex Orozio attend College of the Redwoods and will each receive $500 Kent Holmgren Memorial Scholarships.
Humboldt State University students Wesley Palmer and Colin Campbell each received $1,000 Forest Foundation Scholarships, Sam Jacobszoon and Zachary Jackson received $1,000 Jere Melo Memorial Scholarships, Conor Goldstein received a $2,000 Emanuel Fritz Scholarship, and Jeffrey Silva and Alicia Denarie each received $500 Larry Holmgren Memorial Scholarships.
Other winners of $2,000 Emanuel Fritz Scholarships were University of California Berkeley student Rhianna Dutra, and Cal Poly student Dennis Webb.
Two other $500 Larry Holmgren Memorial Scholarships were awarded to UC Berkeley student Sophia Lemmo and Nadav Laemmie from Cal Poly.
After all awards had been handed out, RRLC Scholarship Committee Chairman Mike Lammori said, "Give these kids a round of applause ... this is the future of our industry."
2014 RRLC President Jerry Garvey said he was pleased to be handing out educational scholarships.
"It's nice to see that (young) people are still interested in working in our industry," he said.
Lammori, a registered professional forester with Sierra Pacific Industries, will serve as president of the 77th annual RRLC when the three-day event returns to Eureka next year in March.
