Special Oscars event, new classes at MGC in Fortuna

Humboldt County residents will be able to attend a special party, complete with a red carpet, to celebrate the Oscar Awards. The event is planned for March 2 at 4 p.m. at the MCG (Multi-Generational Center) in Fortuna. "People are encouraged to get dressed up," said MGC Executive Director Trina Pocket.

The event will include a red carpet, photographer, delicious desserts, movie trivia, and Oscar awards. The ballot for the "official" Oscars will be handed out and party attendees will select their favorites.

"We will collect the ballots, grade them (after the actual Oscar's) and email a grand prize winner," Pockett said.

The cost to attend the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

With a focus on nutrition, the MGC (Multi-Generational Center) in Fortuna is now offering a monthly Kids Cooking Class and the first session will be taking place this weekend.

This is a hands-on cooking class, according to instructor Heather Rust.

"It's teaching kids about whole foods and how to prepare them," she said, "and then sitting down together and eating what is prepared."

The class will cover meal preparation, nutritional values of the food being used, proper table setting, and proper table manners.

The first of the monthly cooking classes will take place Saturday, Feb. 15, from 4-7 p.m.

Youth ages 8 and up may be dropped off at the MGC on Newburg Road for the cooking class, while those under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $10 per person. According to the class description, participants will not be using sharp knives and will not be cooking over an open flame.

Other new activities available at the MGC are Pilates, youth dance, and a sewing class.

"If you've ever wanted to learn how to sew, now is your chance to join this beginners sewing class and learn the basics," MGC Executive Director Trina Pockett said.

Participants are asked to bring their own sewing machine, one yard of cotton fabric, scissors, and a sack lunch. The cost for the class that meets on the first Saturday of the month is $15 per person.

Signing up for these new classes and ongoing programs including conversational Spanish, Zumba, and art is now just a click away. The MGC's website has been enhanced to allow online reservations.

"Aside from the new look and easy accessibility, people now have the capability to register and pay online," Pockett said.

The MGC website is www.ervmgc.com.
