Earning their Safety Award pins

Stephen Hohman of the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department shows Girl Scout Troop 10636 containing Scotia School, South School, and Redwood Prep School students how to properly assist a friend who is choking. The troop was working toward their Safety Award pin. The pin recognizes knowledge of what to do if one get lost, knowing one's phone number and address, who is safe to ask for help if one is lost, what to do if a friend is choking and "stop, drop, and roll." FVFD Hohman addressed choking and "stop, drop and roll" with the girls. Each girl had to demonstrate choking procedures on another Girl Scout, pass a verbal test, and demonstrate SDR procedures. Hohman is out of FVFD Company 4 in Hydesville and volunteered his time to the troop to help increase awareness and knowledge about the proper procedures in emergency situations. The Scouts will receive their pins after they each recite their phone number, address, and proper safe contact person when lost.
