Two traffic collisions, one death: Pedestrian involved in accident dies from injuries

An 80-year-old Eureka man died Tuesday after being hit by a truck while attempting to cross Broadway during heavy morning traffic, according to officials.

Robert G. Mitchell died at St. Joseph Hospital at 11:13 a.m., according to Humboldt County Coroner Dave Parris.

"His next of kin have been notified, and the autopsy is scheduled for Friday," Parris said.

Mitchell was struck by a white Dodge Ram 2500 truck on the 4300 block of south Broadway across from Lithia Chrysler Dodge, according to the Eureka Police Department. The EPD is investigating the cause of the collision.

A second midmorning accident, involving multiple vehicles, occurred on northbound U.S. Highway 101 at Herrick Avenue, according to the EPD. Unsafe speeds for the wet conditions appeared to be a factor, officials said. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the second incident.
