A 2-year-old girl from Myers Flat was accidentally killed Thursday afternoon when she walked behind her father's pickup truck as he was backing out of their driveway on Myers Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jeremy Lozensky.
At around 5:15 p.m., Steven Tilsner, 50, was backing his 1989 Ford pickup truck out of the driveway when his daughter, Ester, unknowingly came out of the house, walked behind the truck and was struck.
Upon realizing what happened, Tilsner rushed to his daughter while a friend who was helping him back out called for help, according to Lozensky.
Lozensky said the 2-year-old was then transported to Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville where she died from her injuries.
"Impairment is not a factor in this collision," Lozensky said.
The Garberville CHP, Myers Flat Fire Department, City Ambulance and Cal Fire all responded to the scene.
