The holiday season in Fortuna is one very busy time of year. There are parties, parades, business open houses, and much more, such as the window-decorating contest in downtown Fortuna.
This year, 30 percent of the downtown merchants decorated their storefronts and windows in the holiday spirit.
First place and People's Choice awards were presented to Antique Depot at 1122 Main St. Their patriotic holiday design includes flags and a tribute to the military.
Strehl's Family Shoes and Repair at the corner of 12th and Main streets captured second place and third place was presented to Country Rose, at 1137 Main St.
There was a tie for Honorable Mention between Hoppy's Froyo and Sequoia Gas.
"Additional honorable mentions were given to the top 10 businesses not selected for the People's Choice award, as a thank you for participating and actively seeking votes," said Fortuna Business Improvement District Executive Director Dianna Rios.
The top 10 businesses receiving honorable mentions included A.M. Baird Engineering, Country Rose, Dakota's Designs, Ferndale Jewelers, Fortuna Art and Old Things, Fortuna Theater, Hoppy's Froyo, Horizon Business Products, Rain All Day Books, and Trendz.
Another seasonal activity, Shop Fortuna for the Holidays, generated a prosperous business climate in the Friendly City during the three-week period this month.
Shoppers were motivated to spend their money in Fortuna, save their receipts and turn them in to see if they would be selected to win Fortuna Bucks. Fortuna Bucks work just like cash, but are only redeemable at businesses in the Friendly City, and can be used to buy something fun or even pay the water bill.
This year's winners are all Fortuna residents: Tracey Johnson received $200 in Fortuna Bucks, Steve Verducci received $100 in Fortuna Bucks, and Susan Burgess received $50 in Fortuna Bucks.
The Shop Fortuna promotion was held from Nov. 19 through Dec. 19. One entry was placed in the drawing for every $200 in receipts from Fortuna purchases.
