A new splash park water play area is now open in southern Humboldt County, the first attraction of its kind to be available locally. A ribbon-cutting was held last week at the Benbow RV Park, located just south of Garberville. The water play area is the first phase of a $2 million improvement project at the park.

"This is in addition to the entire pool area, doubling the size and adding another feature to the existing pool and Jacuzzi," Benbow managing partner John Porter said. New pool furniture and upgrades to the pool restrooms are also planned.

Not only will the water play area offer an enhanced experience to guests at the RV Park, but the plan is also to open the area to members of the local community.

"We are going to open up our splash park/pool area for a daily fee and possibly seasonal passes for local residents," Shirley Petro, park operations manager, said. A day pass is available at a cost of $5 per person and that allows access to the water play area, pool, and Jacuzzi.

"Since we have doubled the size of the pool area with the addition of the splash park," Petro said, "we have the space which will allow others to enjoy this one of a kind facility in Humboldt County."

Splash Zone, headquartered in Arizona, was selected to install the water play feature. "It was a team effort with Splash Zone, three local contractors, and our own maintenance staff, which I am especially proud of, to get the project completed," RV Park General Manager Mark McGowan said.

This is the first of what will be several new recreational facilities added or improved upon at the RV Park. A new sport court and children's play area are currently under construction and are expected to open before the winter rainy season begins.
