Free compost will be available to the public next week at the city of Fortuna's Dinsmore Drive facility. The Exceptional Quality (EQ) Class A compost can be used as a soil amendment, and will be provided to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
The compost will be available beginning Monday through Friday, or until the supply is exhausted. Loading hours will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
"As included in the city's biosolids management plan, the public will be limited to 2.5 cubic yards of material (roughly one full size pickup truck load) per address per year," said Mike Flockhart, Fortuna acting public works director. Small pickup trucks hold approximately 1.25 cubic yards.
"Everyone will be required to sign a "hold harmless" release of liability, and drivers must have proper tarps for covering compost while transporting material from the facility," Flockhart said.
Tarps are not provided by the city, and no pickup trucks with canopies will be loaded.
The compost will be available in a marked loading area through the corporation yard entrance off Dinsmore Drive (second gate past the bridge). More information is available by calling 725-1476.
