Southern Humboldt County's Briceland Vineyards was a big winner in the annual wine competition at the 2013 Humboldt County Fair.

Not only was Briceland Vineyards judged to be the Best Winery in Humboldt County, but two of its wines tied for first in the Best Other White Wines and Best Wines Made from Humboldt County Grapes categories. Those two wines were Humboldt County Brut sparkling wine and white Riesling (Espey Vineyards).

In addition two other Briceland wines won gold medals in the competition: 2012 Arneis (Mendocino County) and 2010 Syrah (Lake County).

"I am very pleased with the recognition for the Arneis," said Briceland Vineyard's Andrew Morris. He said he was also honored for Briceland to receive the Best Humboldt County Winery award, a distinction it had also captured at several previous Humboldt County Fairs.

Morris was also complimentary to other local wineries, saying, "There's quite a bit of good wine being made in Humboldt County today, not just us."

Top honors were also awarded to Rosina Vineyards in Redcrest with its 2009 Pinot noir being declared the Best Pinot Noir in the competition, and to Ferndale-based Frog Alley Cellars in the Best Other Red Wine category, for its 2010 Petite Sirah.

Winner of the Best White Wine award was a 2012 Chardonnay from Fieldbrook Winery.

For the Humboldt County Fair competition, wines are poured out of sight and sound of the judges, and then blindly tasted. Each judge uses a point system to rate the wine in four categories: anticipation, balance, flavor, and satisfaction.
