Saddles and buckles for Fortuna Junior Rodeo Winners

Six Humboldt County cowboys and cowgirls came out on top in the Fortuna Junior Rodeo held last week. The two-day Junior Rodeo was celebrating its 20th year and local contestants took home two of the eight saddles and eight of the 28 buckles awarded to the winners. Nearly 200 participants came from throughout California and Oregon to show off their talents in 27 events including barrels, breakaway roping, goat tying, and team roping.

Humboldt County winners included:

-- Petrolia's Quintin McWhorter, who took home the junior boys All-Around Cowboy saddle, as well as buckles for the Steer Riding and junior boys Goat Tying events.

-- Loleta's Lauren Luna, last year's junior All-Around Cowgirl, was the 2013 senior All-Around Cowgirl, a title she will share this year with Lily Bertelsen of Los Molinos. Luna also took home the buckle in the senior girls Breakaway Roping event, and Bertelsen took home the buckle in the senior girls Goat Tying event.

-- Fortuna's Kelly O'Day took home buckles in the Tie Down and Chute Dogging events.

-- Dylan Hall of Hydesville captured a buckle by winning the senior Bull Riding event, and D.J. Albee from Mad River won the buckle for the Calf Riding event.

-- Mikayla Moore of Redcrest and her team roping partner Jesse Brewer from Los Molinos won buckles for the Girls Team Roping event.

Other saddle winners included: Pee Wee All-Around Cowboy co-champions Colton Suther of Palo Cedro and Blake Vanstavern of Lincoln. Suther also won the buckle in the Goats Ribbon Tying event. Vanstavern also won the buckle in the Dummy Roping event. Junior/junior boys champion was Colby George of Oakdale. Junior girls champion was Rylee George of Oakdale, who also won the buckle in the junior girls Breakaway Roping. Senior boys All-Around Cowboy was Kolby Bravos of Ukiah, who also won the buckle in the adult team roping event.

Other buckle winners included: Pee Wee Single Stakes, Ava Williamson of Ukiah; junior/junior Barrels and junior/junior Goat Tying, Brooklin Quisenberry of Roseburg, Ore.; junior Barrels, Hailey Finnegin of Laytonville; senior Barrels, Erin Clendenen of Cottonwood; Junior/junior Breakaway Roping, Zane George of Oakdale; junior boys Breakaway Roping, Casey Moore of Red Bluff; senior boys Steer Riding, Brushton Minton of Witter Springs; Daubing, MacKenzie Moore of Red Bluff; Hide Race, Trenton Watkins of Lakeport; junior/junior Poles, Lindsey Riedel of Middletown; junior Poles, Jessica Alosi of Palo Cedro; and senior Poles, Emily Clendenen of Cottonwood.
