Fortuna Depot Museum to host book-signing during Redwood AutoXPo

On Saturday the Fortuna Depot Museum welcomes author Katy M. Tahja to autograph copies of her book "Logging Railroads of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties," published in the Images of Rail series by Arcadia Publishing. Tahja will be at the museum from noon to 4:30 p.m. during the Rohner Park antique tractor and farm equipment show as part of the Fortuna Redwood AutoXPo.

"Logging Railroads of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties," published in January, explores the over 40 logging company railroads that flourished in Humboldt and Mendocino from the mid 19th-century onwards. Historian and author Tahja searched universities, historical societies, museums, and private collections for photographs conveying the determination and ingenuity involved in constructing railroads in many unlikely places, to haul huge logs to sawmills and the shipping locations on the coast.

The Fortuna Depot Museum, located at 3 Park St. in Rohner Park, is housed in the Fortuna train station originally built in 1889 by the Eel River and Eureka Railroad. From June 1 through Aug. 31, the museum is open seven days a week from noon to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 725-7645 or visit the city's web page at
