The Fortuna Library will be hosting a kickoff party for their summer reading program on Friday at 10:30 a.m. featuring Sean Powers and his Shadow Puppets.

Sean Powers has been working in Humboldt County as a storyteller, illustrator, and musician for 20 years. Nine years ago, Powers discovered he could combine all his talents in one medium.

Since then he has performed at over 60 different schools, libraries and theaters throughout northern California. He has created 10 different shadow plays based on stories from around the world.

The Fortuna Library holds its annual summer reading program to help encourage children to continue reading even though school is out. The program is for children up to 11 years of age. Those interested can sign up at the library at 753 14th Street.

The program is easy: Once you are signed up, you just read independently, read to an adult or have an adult read to you.

Children that are up to 11 years old can play a game called "Catch Me If You Can" which features stickers and a spinner. After the children are signed up and read one book they can come into the library and play the game. Each time the child reads one book, they can come into the library and play the game again.

Jamie Nickerson of the Fortuna Library said that after reading 24 books and completing the game, children can redeem their game sheet at the front desk for a personal pizza coupon from Round Table.

"The Fortuna Library provides these summer reading programs as an incentive for teens and children to continue reading during the summer months," she said. "Kids who read during the summer are able to retain their reading skills and are better prepared for the coming school year."

The library provides a large variety of reading materials and can often find materials not stored in-house.

"We hope that by encouraging children to select their own reading materials, they are able to broaden their horizons and develop a lifelong interest in books and the library," said Jamie.

Library hours are Tuesday, noon-5 p.m.; Wednesday, noon-9 p.m.; and Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The library is closed Sundays and Mondays and will be closed July 4.
