Affordable housing in Fortuna for seniors and persons with disabilities was one of several highlights at the recent 7th annual Disabilities Expo at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds in Eureka.
The goal of Fortuna-based Lutheran Home for the Aging is to provide safe and affordable housing for the elderly and persons with disabilities, Director of Housing Yvonne Boone said.
"The Expo was a great was for us to spread the word to the public about affordable senior housing in Fortuna," she said. "We were also able to make wonderful contacts with individuals who are in direct contact with the Humboldt community who are looking for affordable housing."
Lutheran Home for the Aging is a non-profit group managing two Housing and Urban Development subsidized housing properties for seniors 62 and older and persons with disabilities on Smith Lane in Fortuna. Those properties are Mountain View Village, which includes 46 one-bedroom units and the Newburg Retirement Center, which features eight studios and 22 one-bedroom units.
Sponsors of the Disabilities Expo included Eel River Valley businesses Humboldt Redwood Company and Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, along with Redwood Capital Bank, Broadway Medical, Walgreens, Renner Petroleum, St. Joseph Hospital, Hospice of Humboldt, Hops in Humboldt, Area 1 Agency on Aging, Patterson Conners Insurance, and Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria.
Proceeds from food sales at the event went to Fortuna-based PJS Love to cover the medical expenses of a young Fortuna boy. Donors to the PJS food booth included: Pierson's Building Center, Forbusco Lumber, Wyatt & Whitchurch, E.A. Inc., State Farm Agent Don Brown, Sequoia Gas, DeMello, McCauley, McReynolds & Holland, LLP, Eel River Brewing Company, Dennis and Sherry Hazelton, Hot Brew, RJ Grimm Investment, Big Louie's Pizza, Safeway, Longboard Subs, Kilicious, Smiling Moose Marketing, Beverage Plus, Rite Aid, Green's Pharmacy, Costco, Papa Murphy's, Cash & Carry, Campton Heights Market, Hoby's Market, Ray's Food Place, Starbucks, and PepsiCo.
The goal of the expo was to increase awareness of local disability-related services and programs. Several hundred people attended the expo, taking advantage of collecting information on a variety of services and programs available all at one location.
