Members of the Fortuna community gathered in prayer last week on 62nd Annual observance of the National Day of Prayer. More than 100 people joined with emcee and Hydesville Community Church Pastor Jeff Beltz to pray for government, church, military, family, education, media, and business.
"Our country needs prayer more than ever now," Beltz said.
Music was provided by local artist Mike Gibbs, who led the audience in singing "God Bless America" and other patriotic songs.
Humboldt County Supervisors Rex Bohn and Estelle Fennell attended the breakfast and read to the audience a county proclamation declaring May 2, 2013 as National Prayer Day.
The resolution read in part: "Whereas in churches, temples, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship, Americans come together to pray for peace, wisdom, and guidance for their own lives, their government leaders, and in the lives of their loved ones, and Whereas recognizing the annual National Day of Prayer in Humboldt County honors the religious diversity that serves as the foundation of our country ... Now, Therefore, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 2, 2013 as a Day of Prayer in Humboldt County."
Former Congressman Don Clausen was not able to attend the breakfast, but had prepared remarks to pray for government. Retired Pacific Lumber Company employee Ken Rigby asked for guidance and wisdom for missionaries, congregations, and anyone on a spiritual journey.
Pastor Rod Sanderson, a retired Army major, asked for the continued protection and blessing of those serving in the military. "Bless the families who have those who have fallen," he said, "and we pray for the healing of the wounded." He also asked for blessings on all veterans.
This year's National Day of Prayer theme was "Pray for America" which is based on Matthew 12:21 emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in God.
"Thank you for praying," Beltz said to those gathered at the breakfast. "Bless these people," he added. "May they grow and shine like stars in the night. Guide us in wisdom and may we choose righteousness all the days."
