Those who live in Fortuna and the surrounding area can hear the echoing of chambers cleared throughout the year on Sundays at the Eel River Trap Club located at 1825 Eel River Drive in Fortuna. The club is open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., except during registered shoots.
The Eel River Trap Club has a modern clubhouse and four traps. The club has developed a solid reputation of being a difficult place to shoot and offers hunter safety classes to the public and members.
"The club was founded in 1963 by Olan Chandler, Shirley Cook, Bill Dunn, Al Grundman, Bud Myers and Larry Wilson who each contributed $100 start up money," said Syd Myers, secretary of the California State Trapshooting Association, a group based out of the ERTC. Myers' husband, Billy Myers, is treasurer of the Pacific International Trapshooting Association.
The trap club leases its property from the city and hosts three registered PITA shoots during the year. The ERTC earned the distinction of becoming the first PITA club to hold a registered "Toys for Tots" event in November 2001.
This event helps raise money for local children and is made up of five separate events. Participants can bring a toy and receive a $10 discount on their event fee, or pay the full price and have the ERTC will donate $10 of their fee.
"Those who start at a young age increase their skills utilizing the safe environment of the ERTC," Syd Myers said. "Some, certainly not all, seem to possess those important ingredients for success like great eyesight, quick reflexes and a strong determination to excel."
The Eel River Trap Club announces their shoot schedule for 2013. The ERTC will be open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. except during registered shoots, starting in April open for several special events 10 a.m. to dark, and starting in May through September Thursdays 10 a.m. to dark and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
