In addition to winning the 8th grade boys 11th annual Ferndale Rotary basketball tournament on Jan. 25 and Jan. 26 in Ferndale, Fortuna's 8th grade Spartans beat Crescent Elk for third place in the Fortuna Classic tournament on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. On March 1 and March 2, the Spartan squad traveled to Crescent City to compete in the 48-team Jaycees Tournament in the AA division.
The Fortuna Spartans beat Terrace, a team from Redding, in their first game, and then beat a very big Oregon team, North Bend, in the second game. They ended up in the championship game in a rematch against Crescent City's Crescent Elk team, but lost this time. Three Spartans were chosen for the All-Tournament Team, including Aidan Morris, Martin Calderon, and Holden Palmer, who received a certificate of eligibility for a $500 college scholarship, upon satisfactory completion of high school. Aidan Morris won first place in the eight-team AA division shooting contest.
Team members included Damian Macias, Luis Baltazar, David Medina, Brice Ray, Garrett Stevens, Martin Calderon, Holden Palmer, Roman Moreno, Aidan Morris, and Chico Cortes. Coaches were Kent Willis and Rick Qualls.
