Christmas fun is being kicked off in true "Friendly City" spirit on Dec. 1 and Dec. 15., with the annual "Kids Free Holiday Movies."
The event will take place at the historic Fortuna Theatre on Main Street, where the staff works feverishly to create the hundreds of popcorn and drink treats provided with the free movie ticket.
Tickets for the event will be in more than 100 Fortuna businesses starting on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Tickets are available to children under 12, who must be accompanied by an adult for the showing of two popular movies.
On Dec. 1, the children will be treated to "Grinch," and Dec. 15 will be a special viewing of "Puss in Boots."
The event is hosted by the city of Fortuna, Fortuna Business Improvement District, and the Fortuna business community. The city waives the rent of the FBID office at the Fortuna Monday Club to provide the overhead needed to rent the theater and movies for the two weekend event each year.
Coupled with the support of the Fortuna businesses and local sponsors, the event provides the opportunity for many children to attend a theater movie with their loved ones and friends -- something that may not be possible families in these tough economic times.
Dianna Crow, Fortuna Business Improvement District coordinator, credits the community for making this event come alive for the children.
"This would not be possible without the many businesses and residents who go beyond the call of duty to put on this annual event along with the City of Fortuna and FBID," she said.
