Dutch Oven Society Apple Harvest Cook-Off Oct. 6

Join us for a unique culinary experience and explore the world of black pot cooking, America's original "Iron Chefs", at a Dutch Oven sampler.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the local FDOS is hosting its eighth annual Apple Harvest Cook-off. The event coincides with the 28th Apple Harvest Festival, one of Fortuna's most beloved family fun days held outdoors citywide.

Cooking will take place at Rohner Park, off Main Street. The cooking area opens at 7:30 a.m. and sign-in for dutch oven cooks will start promptly at 8 a.m. A cooks meeting is planned for 9 a.m. to review cook-off rules and judging criteria. This is a 1 to 3 cook-off: main dish, bread, and a dessert. You may sign up for one category or all three. Apples must be incorporated into the dessert dish. There is no entry fee for any of the dishes and samples of the food will be available for tasting. The public is invited to attend and try some of the recipes, learn more about black pot cooking, and our local Dutch Oven Society.

Each category will have first, second and third place prizes. Prizes this year for each category are: $50 for first place, $30 for second, $20 for third. The table judged as "Best Looking" for their booth design will receive a prize. The theme of the tables will be "Apple Harvest." Cook-off entrants will be provided with one table and a marked-off area in the grass. You will be cooking in an open area, so bring a type of E-Z up instant shelter which can be anchored to the ground.
