Women in Timber Scholarships awarded to high school and college students

Six high school and four college students will continue their higher education pursuits with financial support from the north Coast Chapter of Women in Timber. Five of the recipients and one of the recipient's father attended a luncheon at Roy's Club in Eureka in their honor last week.

Memorial scholarships were awarded in honor of Bettie Boak, Bob Dickerson, Arthur "Bud" Harwood, Tony and Gerry Leonardo, Jere Melo, Donald Nolan Sr. and Sarie Toste.

Martin Anderson from Del Norte High School plans to attend Humboldt State University and study freshwater fisheries and riparian habitat. "I am interested in balancing the needs of fish and people," Anderson said. Hewill receive a $1,000 scholarship, made possible from the donation by American Ag Credit.

Eureka High School senior Mackenzie Dorn is a member of a fourth generation southern Humboldt County ranch family, and she has plans to attend Chico State and major in Agriculture Business.

Planning to study Natural Resources and Environmental Science with a focus on timber and water quality is Fortuna High School senior Emily Janowski. Dornand Janowski will each receive $500 scholarships.

Accepting Arcata High School senior Felicia Watson's $500 David Kinsey Memorial Scholarship was her father Humboldt County Judge Bruce Watson. Felicia will attend UC Berkeley and major in Biology and Biochemistry with plans to eventually work in the medical field.

Humboldt State University students Kelsey McGrath and Sam Tenneson are both studying Forestry Operations. Tenneson will complete his college education in one more quarter, and will use his $500 scholarship to finish his schooling. McGrath has one more year left at HSU and also received a $500 scholarship.

Other high school seniors receiving scholarships but not able to attend the luncheon were: Ehlana Churchill ($250) and Kelly Pedrotti ($500) both of Eureka High School. Humboldt State University student Tyler Herron will receive a $500 scholarships, and Cal Poly student Valerie Grant will also receive a $500 scholarship.

The North Coast chapter of Women in Timber awarded a total of $5,250 in 2012 scholarships.
