A committed and compassionate board of directors, now at the helm of the Eel River Valley Multi-Generational Center in Fortuna, hopes to begin serving the community in a couple of months.

"We have a total of nine strong board members, with a good diversity of age," said Center Start-up Coordinator Sabrina DeLashmutt. The board members are Sarah Albin, Connie Berti, Laurie Clendenen, Chris Cooper, Rachel Fuentes, Becky Giacomini, Marsha Hayes, Angela Johnson, and Cheryl Nicholson.

There was discussion of future plans at the first board meeting held April 3. "Some were concentrating on seniors having space at the center and others were concentrating on teens (activities)," DeLashmutt said. "Other priorities mentioned were special education, utilizing the kitchen at the facility for cooking classes, and the garden area," she added.

The center will be located on Newburg Road in Fortuna, in the building of the former Adult Day Health Care Services.

Whitchurch Engineering is almost finished with a review of the building from an engineering perspective. That report is expected to be submitted to the city of Fortuna by the end of this week. The city has indicated it will review the report over the next three to four weeks and the issue will then be placed on the Planning Commission agenda, perhaps in early May. The city must issue a conditional use permit in order for the Multi-Generational Center to begin operations.

DeLashmutt said there are also plans in the works to build a playground at the new Center. She is working to secure funding from a non-profit organization called KaBOOM!, which helps underserved communities build playgrounds. She hopes to know by the end of April whether this project will be funded, and if it is, the playground could be built in August of this year.
